Abstract

The process of electron loss in single collisions during the passage of fast hydrogen atoms through hydrogen has been studied in the energy range 40-220 kev. The ratio Q01(H)/Q01(H2) of the electron-loss cross sections in atomic and molecular hydrogen has been determined by using a tungsten tube furnace to provide a target composed of highly dissociated hydrogen. At energies above about 120 kev, cross sections Q01(H) estimated by the use of well-established values of Q01(H2) are found to be in good agreement with theoretical values calculated by Bates and Griffing using Born's approximation.
