Abstract
Summary A 21-item, multiple choice questionnaire regarding social history was developed to measure the social competence level of adult males. The Life Experience Scale (LES) was evolved as an expansion of the process-reactive distinction so that this concept could be applied to nonschizophrenics. Scores were unrelated to age or to socio-economic status for three different samples. The test-retest reliability coefficient for a one month delay was .87 (df = 15, p < .001). The LES was related to the Ullmann and Giovannoni self-report measure r = .84 (df = 15, p <.001) and also related to VA ratings for psychiatric disability r = -.57 (df = 19, p < .01). A comparable range of LES scores was found for schizophrenic, alcoholic, and normal groups of 24 Ss each.
