Abstract

In this study, the thermal impact of using annular porous fins attached to the outer surface of a suspended heated vertical cylinder with constant heat flux was experimentally investigated. The study took place under steady-state and natural convection conditions. Three diameters of Aluminum cylinders and two types of porous material were used with different fin configurations like fin thickness and number of fins. The experimental results showed that the value of the averaged Nu number is a strong function of permeability K. The study showed a clear enhancement of heat transfer when porous fins are used. The minimum enhancement of the heat transfer coefficient was 7.9% when using one fin with a 10 mm thickness, and the maximum enhancement reaches 131% when using a porous layer.
