Abstract

An experimental investigation of high-current transferred arcs operating in argon between graphite electrodes is presented. This includes measurements of cathode and plasma temperatures and measurements of erosion rates for cathodes using different grades of graphite. The measurements and visual observation of the arc show that the arc operates in two different modes depending upon the arc current and the cathode composition. A description of these modes is presented and it is shown that the arc behaviour is greatly influenced by the properties of the cathode materials.
