Abstract

Summary A technique that would allow for mandibular replacement using an internal thoracic vessel island composite rib graft in dogs is described. This procedure not only supplies a portion of rib with its own intact circulation, but can also provide additional skin and soft tissue. A similar procedure in humans, utilising the internal mammary vessels, appears to be feasible but has not yet been tried. Further extension of the use of the composite bone flap is possible with the use of microvascular surgical techniques.
