Abstract
Based on the simple criterion that no rupture may initiate at the tip of an existing crack, before yielding occurs in the defect free zone, it is possible to determine experimentally, for through cracks the maximum acceptable crack length, and for surface cracks the acceptable crack depth, For welds it is even possible by a suitable choice of weld metal to determine a maximum crack length or depth so that fracture occurs in the defect free parent metal. Experimental results confirm the theoretical considerations.
