Abstract

Transient heat transfer during the devolatilization of a spherically shaped coal particle was investigated theoretically and experimentally. The dimensionless experimental temperature values were obtained by measuring the temperatures at the center of the coal particle and the dimensionless theoretical values were also obtained using the boundary condition of the third kind (due to the Biot number numbers between 0 and 100), considering conduction, convection, radiation, and internal heat generation. In the comparison of the theoretical and experimental values, the experimental measurements showed good agreement with the predictions when all of the heat transfer and generation terms are utilized.
