Abstract

Introduction. During the fall semester of 1954 an experiment was conducted at Highland Park High School, Highland Park Independent School District, Dallas, Texas, to determine the comparative value in relation to the improvement of reading skills in a developmental reading program at the tenth grade level of (1) two types of mechanical devices (the Keystone Tachistoscope or the Renshaw individual Tachistoscope Trainer and the SRA Reading Accelerator), used individually or together as special reading aids; (2) direct approaches to reading skills other than mechanical devices; (3) a guided free reading program; and (4) a certain prescribed course of study. This article will discuss the implementation and results of the experiment with reference to the SRA Reading Accelerator, and subsequent articles will give a similar report relative to direct approaches to reading skills other than mechanical devices and the guided free reading program.
