Abstract

Abstract Although it is proved theoretically that a two-parameter model is capable of converting potential energy into kinetic, there has been some doubt about its ability to predict successfully the strong cyclogenesis often associated with this energy conversion. The experiment described in this paper is intended to be a contribution to the solution of this problem. A two-level primitive equation model with constant static stability has been integrated for two cases characterized by typical baroclinic developments, and the results are compared to the barotropic forecasts for the same cases. The two-level prognoses are not better than the barotropic in many respects, but they show that at least some baroclinic developments can be predicted by this model.
