Abstract

Ten patients aged 4–20 yr (average 13.0 yr) underwent implantation of a permanent cardiac pacemaker during the last 7 yr. Indications for pacing were symptomatic complete heart block (4), post surgical complete heart block (3), symptomatic sinus node dysfunction (2) and chronic bifasicular block with intermittent complete heart block (1). Lithium powered ventricular inhibited demand pacemakers (VVI) were implanted in 9 (7 fixed rate and 2 programmable) and mercury— zinc VVI unit in 1 patient. Five patients received epicardial and the remaining 5 transvenous endocardial systems. There were 2 instances of late onset (6 months) lead displacement and one patient each developed pouch infection and pacemaker extrusion respectively. These complications were managed successfully. The long term follow up of these 10 patients (10months-80 months, mean 51.3 months) is excellent. All are leading a productive life. Current indications for pacing in the young, and the optimal choic of equipment and techniques discussed.
