Abstract
In recent years atmospheric pollution by the exhaust emissions of vehicles has become of increasing concern, particularly in America. One consequence of this has been a review of alternative power sources to the petrol engine, with the object of finding a suitable system with significantly lower quantities of toxic emission products. The merits of various possible systems have been amply discussed elsewhere and are not covered in this paper. Among others, the Rankine cycle engine using steam or other vapour has been put forward and indeed has many ardent supporters. It has been the subject of considerable publicity in the technical and popular press, for the most part extolling its virtues but seldom mentioning any vices.
