Abstract

Mathematics as a tool for system specification and design has been around for approximately 25 years. Its slow take-up is due to the perceived difficulty of the ideas and their application. Mathematics as a tool for system design and specification has two major advantages. The first is the ability to write down abstract models of a system that will provide a better understanding. The second is to provide a development method that will produce correct code from a specification. The first of these activities is addressed in this paper-several models of a system are built, each either providing a more abstract view or addressing a difficulty found in the English specification.
