Abstract

Strain gage tests on a truck of the Odakyu S.E. train under running were conducted, and the authors obtained the results as listed below : (1) On a well maintained track as the one between Ofuna and Chigasaki stations, the lateral force caused a pair of wheels and axle is within 2.5t accordingly the maximum speed being 145 km/h on straight lines, 85 km/h on the 400 m curve, 100 km/h on 500 m curve and 140 km/h on point. Deduction from the results suggests posibility of further speed-up. (2) On a less well maintained track as the one between Kannami and Numazu stations, much larger lateral forces sometimes occur at a high speed, even on the straight track. (3) The maximum ratio of dynamic stress to static stress of car axles is about 2.0. (4) In view of material strength, the wheel, the axle, the bogie frame and the upper bolster-all can afford to be made lighter.
