Abstract

This study is focussed on the Biological Reserve of Donana (Spain) where a first application of Ellenberg’s indicators has been attempted on dune vegetation. Ellenberg indicators have been estimated for species of the Iberian flora using the reprediction algorithm (Hillet al., 2000; Fanelliet al., 2006). Vegetation data have been sampled by 53 linear transects placed in the 22 sites and carried out in homogeneous vegetation. PCA (Principal Component Analysis) axes of the matrix species/sites showed a good correlation with Ellenberg’s indicators. Basing on three ecological gradients, light (L), temperature (T) and soil moisture (F), Gis ecological maps have been obtained showing the distribution and variation of ecological indicators in the landscape. Mapping the variation of Ellenberg’s indicators in the landscape allows to detect which areas are more subjected to change and therefore which areas should be considered prioritary in management measures. This innovative application is promising in the assessment of dunes system degradation, presently a serious problem at world scale.
