Abstract

Randomly occurring defects and the weakest link theory are frequently used to describe the distribution of break strengths observed in fibers. However, with crimped polyester staple, and probably other melt-spun fibers, the contribution of differences in fiber orientation is at least as large, perhaps larger. When both defects and orientation are considered, a Gaussian distribution is generally a better description of the strength variation.
