Abstract

The purpose of the present study was to compare the legibility of text scrolled across a 40 character reflective twisted nematic field effect liquid crystal display and a 40 character vacuum fluorescent display. In addition to display type, the effect of the following factors on legibility were also examined: 1) the amount of light, 2) scrolling rate, and 3) type of scrolling (word vs. character). The range of angle adjustment or tilt selected by the operators was also recorded. The results indicated that there were no significant performance differences between the displays although reduced room lighting did have a significant negative impact on operators error rates for both types of displays. The angle settings selected by the operators also differed between the displays, with the LCD exhibiting a greater range of adjustment than the vacuum fluorescent display.
