Abstract

This study assessed the efficacy of using a frequency-based response format as a unique alternative to traditional Likert-type response formats to obtain a measure of temporal stability on the Big Five personality dimensions. The results of Study 1 ( N = 143) showed that dimension scale reliabilities and convergent validity coefficients were similar across the two rating formats. The results from Study 2 ( N = 120) demonstrated that a measure of temporal stability obtained via the frequency-based response format (which was not available with the Likert-type format) moderated self/other agreement for extraversion, agreeableness, and emotional stability. Thus, frequency-based response formats may be a valuable alternative to Likert-type response formats for personality measurement.
