Abstract

PURPOSE: To evaluate the changes in bite force before and after orthognathic surgical correction of facial skeletal deformities. METHOD: This study included 10 female patients within the age group of 20-30 years, diagnosed with skeletal maxillomandibular facial deformities with retrognathism being common to all patients. The maximal biting force(MBF) of the patients was measured pre-operatively and post-operatively after 6 weeks, 3 months, 6 months using a custom-made device called a Bite force sensor. RESULTS: Postoperatively, by 6th week, there was significantly less amount of bite force recorded compared to pre-operative values, which gradually increased till 3 months and a significant amount of improvement was seen at the end of 6 months. CONCLUSION: This study concluded that post-operatively the bite force showed gradual improvement, where the maximum improvement was found between 3rd and 6th month.
