Abstract

Owing to the effects of aerodynamic damping force, the oscillations of a tower building in the directions of two mutually orthogonal horizontal principal axes are aerodynamically coupled. If the two fundamental natural frequencies of a tower building in the two axial directions differ greatly from each other, the effects of areodynamic coupling between the two axial oscillations are quite small and can be neglected. If the two fundamental natural frequencies of a tower building in the two axial directions are the same, galloping oscillations may take place in the two axial directions at the same time. In the light of quasi-steady approach, a general formula to define onset wind velocity for 2—D coupled galloping oscillations of tower buildings is presented in this paper. The onset wind velocity for 2—D coupled galloping oscillations of tower buildings with square section is also analyzed and evaluated on the basis of some related references, and several important conclusions are obtained.
