Abstract

This article explores some of the implications of the relationships among ethos, world view, and archaeological practice by presenting a perspective on the dominant world view and ethos of contemporary American archaeology. The focus of the discussion is on how the archaeologists' world view enhances or obscures archaeological practice in various contexts. The authors propose an ethos and an ethic that reflects their view of the context of contemporary archaeological practice.
