Abstract

We developed “GO405 Field Methods in Environmental Geoscience” so our undergraduates planning to enter the environmental industry could obtain hands-on experience with equipment. The two criteria for selecting equipment were 1) appropriate levels of complexity and 2) applicability to environmental analysis. The equipment in the first offering of the course included a ground-penetrating radar system, portable water-analysis laboratories, a gas-vapor soil-survey kit, a portable organic-vapor meter, and a global-positioning-system receiver. Students developed competency with this equipment and incorporated it into projects of their own design. They valued the course and appreciated our objective of preparing them for employment. We recommend such a course for departments wanting to increase student opportunities for technical employment in the environmental industry.
