Abstract

A general model is presented to obtain consistent calculations of phase equilibria for mixtures containing electrolytes. Consideration is given to mixed solvents and mixed electrolyte systems with both weak and strong electrolytes; applications are cited for several systems. The method is based on the formation of the mixture in a hypothetical state. Contributions from molecular interactions are added to the Helmholtz energy of formation. Differentiation of the Helmholtz energy gives the chemical potential of all species in the mixture. Minimization of the total Gibbs energy yields the desired physical and chemical equilibria.
