Abstract

The relationship between glass composition and local structure was examined by electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) analysis of vanadium(IV) in CaO and Na2O based Al2O3–SiO2 glasses. The characteristic EPR spectrum of vanadium(IV) was affected with change in glass composition, equilibrium oxygen partial pressures and melting temperature. From the available previous reports and current study, it seems that a close relationship exists between octahedral and tetrahedral vanadium, which depends upon temperature. The results are important to understanding of vanadium behavior as a candidate in Al–V–Si BMGs and their nano-composites.
