Abstract

Abstract Objective: To investigate the incidence of bullrout envenomation on the north coast of NSW. Methodology: A questionnaire seeking information on bullrout envenomation was prepared and delivered to Emergency Departments in selected north coast hospitals. Participants: Participants were all individuals who presented with bullrout sting between November 1997 and April 1998 inclusive. Findings: Twenty-one individuals presented with bullrout sting during the stated time period. The typical victim profile is a young male, stung on the hand or foot while swimming in shallow reedy water. The venom is non-lethal in nature and pain is effectively relieved with heat, local anaesthetics and analgesic.
