Abstract

The authors describe the creation and operation of a geographic information system designed to monitor and analyze the environmental impacts generated by the Moscow Ring Road, a multi-laned expressway encircling the city of Moscow. Particular attention is devoted to the Road's effects on soils, vegetation, and surface waters. The structure of the GIS databases and the nature of their operation are described.
