Abstract

Over the past 5 years we have developed an entomology contest for the Future Farmers of America (FFA) in New Mexico that has experienced a very satisfying and growing popularity. The results of this contest have been very encouraging to us. It was designed for FFA Members who want to demonstrate their knowledge of identification and control for the most numerous of all animals. In 1979, a total of 21 four-member teams took part in the State FFA Insect Identification Contest. A year later this rose to 32 teams, and 38 teams participated in the contest by 1982. In addition, many of the local groups held contests before the state contest. There have also been state 4-H contests. FFA leaders and members, county agents, and vocational agriculture teachers around the state have indicated their support for the program. All are enthusiastic about the contest and several FFA members have shown an interest in a career in entomology.
