Abstract

A lymphocyte transformation test for the in vitro assessment of cell-mediated immunity (CMI) to cytomegalovirus (CMV) was established. The test was specific for CMV and only lymphocytes from CMV seropositive donors responded. However, we observed that the response of lymphocytes from CMV seropositive donors was decreased or abolished in the presence of CMV seronegative plasma or serum. The reason for this apparent requirement for CMV seropositive serum, not reported by others performing similar tests, is not clear and suggests prudence in the interpretation of lymphocyte transformation assays as a measure of CMI.
