Abstract

Stark shift in AlGaAs/GaAs symmetric and asymmetric coupled quantum wells is compared experimentally and theoretically. Symmetric coupled quantum wells possess a linear and enhanced Stark shift which is relatively insensitive to small perturbations in quantum well width and mismatch ratio. Asymmetric coupled quantum wells also possess a linear and enhanced Stark shift. However, in contrast to symmetric wells, the Stark shift is quite sensitive to well width and mismatch ratio. The linear and enhanced Stark shift in AlGaAs/GaAs asymmetric and symmetric coupled quantum wells is experimentally confirmed using photoluminescence on an n-i-n device structure.
