Abstract

A simple numerical method which allows calculation of Mode I stress intensity factors is presented. Using a linear extrapolation of the energy release rate ℷ, as calculated using standard nonsingular isoparametric elements and a relatively course mesh, accuracies of better than 5% may be obtained. The method presented is attractive in that modelling an extending crack requires only the removal of nodal restraints thus by-passing the necessity of continually relocating a specialized crack tip element. Further, the use of linear extrapolation negates the need for small closure elements in the mesh. The ease with which the method may be used makes it applicable to general finite element packages where crack modelling capabilities are either not available or difficult to implement.
