Abstract
RATIONALE: While atopic dermatitis (AD) cannot be cured with existing treatments, the results of this study show that it is possible to cure most cases of AD by radically changing the method of treatment. METHODS: The study targeted 305 AD sufferers (average age 24.8 years, males: females = 115: 190, average length of illness 11.9 years) who were treated at this Clinic. Of these AD sufferers, the degree of severity was most severe in 85 cases (27.9%), severe in 98 cases (32.1%), moderate in 119 cases (39.0%) and mild in 3 cases (1.0%). Medicinal Chinese herbal remedies used for AD treatment were selected and administered in accordance with the sufferer's symptoms (known as Sho in oriental medicine). In principle, no steroids or other similar substances were administered, either through external application or internal ingestion. RESULTS: The results of treatment using medicinal Chinese herbal remedies for AD sufferers were that, with the exclusion of 31 cases that dropped out (10.2%), 87.2% of cases were cured (239/274), 11.7% of cases showed a marked improvement (23/274), and 3 cases showed an improvement. The length of treatment was 13.3 weeks on average. Moreover, even in sufferers whose AD rash had not cleared even after ingesting steroids, AD was cured in a short time through treatment with Chinese herbal remedies. CONCLUSIONS: This study means that AD can be controlled. Furthermore, the fact that AD was easily cured by treatment with Chinese herbal remedies shows that the genetic involvement and immune response related to AD need to be reexamined.
