Abstract

Albeit the importance of open innovation is widely recognized, its distinction from other novel forms of innovation, such as open-source software (OSS), innovation contest, and mass customization (MC) is not clearly addressed. The purpose of this paper is to categorize web-based interactive innovation (i.e., WII) based on recent practices. The methodology is based on comparative analysis of 137 cases of WII. The study builds upon existing literature on open innovation, OSS, innovation contest, and MC. The study resolves the confusion between open innovation and user innovation by classifying WII practices into technology-oriented and product-oriented WII (i.e., TWII and PWII), according to the type of innovation object involved.
