Abstract

The performance of a sample of public Canadian-owned chains of retail stores is assessed using data envelopment analysis over the 15 years spanning the period from 2000 to 2014. Our analysis shows that the chains of food and beverage retail stores presented the best practices. In addition, we found that the impact of the 2008 financial crisis on the performance of the chains of retail stores was statistically significant only for the scale efficiencies. A similar result was found while investigating differences in efficiency between the firms that had international operations and the ones that focused only on the domestic market.
