An Empirical Study of Australia's Class Action Regimes, Third Report: Class Action Facts and Figures - Five Years Later

Abstract

This is the third report stemming from an empirical study of Australia’s class action regimes that was commenced in 2009. This report provides data with respect to the first 22 years of operation of Australia’s federal class action regime; that is, the period from 4 March 1992 to 3 March 2014. In particular, it provides data with respect to the total, average and median number of class actions; the duration of those proceedings that were resolved as at 1 October 2014; the types of substantive claims that have been advanced on behalf of the class members; the number of class actions that have been supported by commercial litigation funders; the total and average number of legal disputes that have been the subject of class actions; the most important law firms that have represented class representatives; and the outcomes of these class actions.
