Abstract

THE text of 17 (2 Aqht).l.351 was first read by C. Virolleaud2 as [b yd(?) . y]ehd. El Cbdh ('I1 takes his servant by the hand'). In his comment on the line,3 he bases the restoration of byd on the semantic parallel of Bel [sic] taking Utnapishtim by the hand in order to bless him, as recounted in the Mesopotamian Gilgamesh epic.4 The servant he takes to be Danil. Virolleaud's restoration and general interpretation have been accepted, among authors whom I have consulted, by J. Aistleitner,5 P. Fronzaroli,6 and R. J. Clifford.7 Over the years, at least two other suggestions have been made: restore either bkm8 or hn,9 interpreting both as particles of transition. Others have translated without proposing a restoration.'0
