Abstract

Voice-over-Internet Protocol (VoIP) is an infrastructure for the delivery of voice communications over IP networks by enlisting a group of hardware and software technologies. The VoIP regulation (channel setup, signaling, digitization and encoding) is similar to public switch telephone network (PSTN). The VoIP packetize the digital data and send it over packet-switch network as IP packet, however, the PSTN transmits the data over the circuit-switched network. The VoIP offers different services (i.e. text messaging, call conferencing and video call) although a major concern to deliver such services to the end user is bandwidth availability with very low latency. Ethernet passive optical network (EPON) is regarded as the best solution in access networks in deployment, cost, bandwidth and user equipment friendly to satisfy the VoIP requirements. In this paper, we propose an embedded VoIP server in the Optical Line Terminal (OLT). The traffic classifier and SIP-VoIP components are added to OLT to enhance the EPON to handle VoIP service. The optical network unit (ONU) separates the VoIP traffic based on class of service (CoS) and Type of Service and assign a high priority to this kind of traffic. The DBA is designed to handle four types of traffic (EF, voip, AF and BE) and satisfy the VoIP requirements. Our simulation results show that the proposed embedded VoIP server improves the overall VoIP quality of service (QoS) in terms of mean packet delay, jitter and packet loss. Moreover, the proposed DBA improves the system throughput in advance.
