Abstract

An elliptic-shaped double-staggered grating waveguide (E-DSGW) slow wave structure (SWS) is introduced in this paper for 200 GHz sheet beam traveling wave tubes (TWT). Unlike conventional DSGW, gratings with an elliptic-shaped cross-section are connected rather than rectangular gratings. With appropriate optimization of the input/output couplers, the transmission coefficient S21 is higher than − 3 dB and the reflection coefficient S11 is under − 15 dB from 186 to 211 GHz. The E-DSGW SWS has a high gain for a 200 GHz TWT with sheet beam voltage of 18.75 kV and current of 0.1 A. With a length of 40 mm, the TWT can provide a saturation power of 68.9 W. Finally, a proof-of-concept structure at ka-band is manufactured and measured.
