OWENS The author is an Associate Professor of Mathematics at the University of New Hampshire. He received his B.S. degree from Webb Institute of Naval Architecture after which he served in the Navy as a ship repair officer. He is now a Lieutenant Commander in the Naval Reserve. He received the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Mathematics from the California Institute of Technology. After one and one half years as a Research Associate in the Division of Applied Mathematics at Brown University he spent three years with the Office of Naval Research as a Mathematician.
