Abstract

The difficulty in distinguishing Ictalurus lupus from I. punctatus and the lack of information regarding all aspects of L lupus have led to some doubt about its specific status. The relationship of these two species is examined using enzyme electrophoresis and multivariate morphometry of external characters. Electrophoretic and multivariate analyses agree in dividing catfish samples from four rivers in Texas and Mexico into two distinct groups corresponding to I. punctatus and 1. lupus. They appear to be in contact in the Devils River where I. punctatus is known to occur and I lupus and several hybrids have been collected.
