Abstract

A magnetic long-lens electron-electron coincidence spectrometer has been adapted for in-beam measurements of short nuclear lifetimes. The in-beam experimental problems with this instrument are discussed and the need of zero-level and gain stabilization of the time spectrum is pointed out. A system has been designed which allows in-beam measurements of lifetimes down to 10 ps. Techniques for the in-beam measurements are described and experimental results are presented. A preliminary report is also given on a new technique for lifetime measurements using a pulsed beam and an electron spectrometer in coincidence.
