Abstract

Cone-shaped YSZ electrolyte cylinders with a wall thickness of less than 0.2mm have been fabricated using slip casting technique. Single solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) units have been made by applying La0.6Sr0.4Co0.2Fe0.8O3 (LSCF)- Ce0.9Gd0.1O1.95 (GDC) cathode material on the outside of the cylinders and NiO- GDC anode on the inside. A three-cell-stack has been assembled by connecting the cone-shaped SOFC units in electrical series via metallic interconnects and seals. The open circuit voltage (OCV) of the three-cell-stack was 2.9V and the maximum power was over 0.9W at 800{degree sign}C with humidified hydrogen as fuel and the ambient air as oxidant. Analysis of the impedance spectrum suggests that there is still potential to raise the stack output via improving the electrode performance.
