Wilkinson, P. G. ; Mulliken, R. S. Abstract It is shown that certain weak absorption lines observed on high-resolution photographs of the LBH (Lyman-Birge-Hopfield) bands of nitrogen are members of S and 0 branches (AJ = +2) and must therefore belong to an electric quadrupole electronic transition This is the first known example of an electric quadrupole transition in the electronic spectra of molecules. The familiar Q, R, and P branches (AJ = 0, +1) of the LBH bands must then also be at least partly electric quadrupole and not just magnetic dipole, as currently supposed. It is shown by an approximate treatment that the electric quadrupole contribution to their intensity is perhaps about 15 per cent of the total The interpretation of the present observations removes all possible doubt concerning the assignment of the LBH bands as a 111g - e+ transition.
