Abstract

This article proposes an enhanced model of environmental parameter monitoring system for experimental laboratories through intelligent sensing, processing and communication techniques. Air pollution and excess temperature conditions that are of general concern in chemical laboratories are monitored by this system. Considering the probability of parameter detection and processing power requirements, Libelium Waspmote smart sensor system is used, which are widely recommended for indoor and outdoor environmental monitoring. A Wireless Sensor Network (WSN) is established in the laboratory by incorporating multiple sensor nodes and a centralized Meshlium gateway having 4G, Wi-Fi and Ethernet connectivity. The gateway hosts the processed data to a cloud platform for storage. In order to improve the process identification and system consistency, multi sensor data fusion using Kalman filter based on Variance based Sensor Data Fusion technique is implemented at the WSN gateway. The efficacy of the sensor fusion technique in providing the best and consistent process information is demonstrated in the context of laboratory environmental monitoring.
