Abstract

Broadcasting technique is very efficient for popular videos. But batching technique is better when the arrival rate is not high enough. In this paper, an analytical model has been developed to select appropriate videos to transmit via each delivery technique and allocate appropriate number channels for each transmission method depending on the video popularity such that the average user delay is minimized for a given number of channels. The channels dedicated to broadcasting are distributed among the videos nonuniformly according to their relative popularity. The remaining channels are allocated on request to those videos that are delivered by batching. This hybrid transmission scheme minimizes the user delay at all arrival rates, if there exists any feasible allocation.
