Abstract

An algorithm for the plastic limit analysis of structures by the finite element method is presented. The algorithm operates on a very compact solving system and involves a minimum of pivoting operations. It is based on the mesh description of the unsafe theorem of plastic limit analysis in which only a subset of the critical plastic parameters are explicit and circumvents Phase I of Dantzig's method. Multiple load cases are solved sequentially using the results of the previous analysis. Both static and kinematic configurations at collapse are provided as well as the multiple solutions that may exist. The algorithm is presented in both tabular and revised forms and is illustrated with an application of the yield line method.
