Abstract

A new functionalized basic ionic liquid, 4-amino-1-(2,3-dihydroxy propyl) pyridinium hydroxide [ADPPY] [OH], has been introduced as a catalyst for the synthesis of tetrahydrobenzo[b]pyrans under mild conditions. The desired products can be separated directly from the reaction mixture with high purity. Only 10 mol% catalyst was needed with a sequestration time of 10 min. In addition, the ionic liquid used can be regenerated and recycled several times without significant loss of activity.
