Abstract

It is well established that interaction between powertrain and vehicle dynamics contributes significantly to the vehicle handling and ride response. This paper proposes a simple and efficient powertrain model for a Front-Wheel-Drive (FWD) vehicle to support vehicle design studies. This model captures the major interactions that impact vehicle ride and handling and is capable of real-time execution. A detailed description of the model is provided as well as how it is coupled to the vehicle model. Simulation results are presented for an example vehicle. The ability to predict vehicle acceleration performance is demonstrated. The model is also used to investigate dynamic responses in throttle tip-in events and for road disturbance.
