Abstract

This work proposes a new structure of a single switch dual output DC-DC converter that is solely dedicated to optimization the size as well as the performance of solar photovoltaic (PV) array fed switched reluctance motor (SRM) and electrolytic capacitors. The proposed dual output DC-DC converter is not only adequate to extract maximum power from PV panel but it also minimizes the requirement of large PV output capacitor. It provides continuous input and output power to the system with a low ripple content. The proposed DC-DC converter is also capable to minimize the size of DC-link capacitor and to provide a balanced output voltages, which is obligatory for a utilized four phase switched reluctance motor (SRM) driven irrigation pumping system. An improved P & O (Perturb and observe) based MPPT technique is used in proposed system. This MPPT controller has an additional advantage of regulating the flow rate of water pumping by adjusting the duty cycle of proposed DC-to-DC converter. Owing to the fundamental frequency switching of a mid-point converter, there is significant reduction in the semiconductor losses. Test results are presented on an 875 Wp PV array fed a 1 hp pump, demonstrate sound agreement with simulated results obtained in Matlab and test results of proposed system.
