Abstract

After assessing the needs and preferences of access services users at the University of Connecticut Libraries, a Web site design team analyzed techniques for making users more aware of services and to access them via a revised Web site. A significant design goal was to make the Web page more effectively convey information and reduce the ambiguity and confusion of cluttered text and long lists of choices. Utilizing the basic service information already available, the Web creator integrated miscellaneous elements in the revised page‐including color, style, and various technologies‐to establish a user‐friendly and extremely navigable Web site. The resulting Web site became a virtual extension of the Access Services Department and a 24/7 vehicle for information not previously available in one discrete location.
