An effective Bloch wave theory for light propagation in nonlinear media

Abstract

Bloch wave theory is applied to a periodic nonlinear dielectric. Although this approach gives the same result as the coupled-wave theory in the linear case, the results obtained disagree dramatically in the presence of nonlinearities. An effective Bloch approach is proposed. This new scheme yields satisfactory results and can be easily extended to nonlinear photonic band structures.
