An Economic Survey of West Irian.∗ Part I

Abstract

∗ The collection of material on the West Irian economy has been made possible only by the strong support of many people. Professor Arndt, Professor Sukisno, Rektor of Cenderawasih University and Brigadier General Jusuf Singedekane facilitated our visits to West Irian. Brigadier General Akub Zainal assisted us in collection of official data: Drs Anwas Iskandar, Professor Malcolm Walker, Drs Sareko and the staff of the Lakbangda Secretariat, Mr Bernt Bernander and other UNDP staff provided us with considerable assistance in Jayapura, and Dr Makaliwe helped us with some very useful data. The authors are grateful to these and to many other people and institutions which helped in data collection. Each of the authors spent only four weeks in West Irian, so that heavy reliance is placed on secondary materials. Wherever possible, we have checked all statistics against alternative series. Although inaccuracies remain, we are confident that none of the data we have presented in this Survey is seriously misleading. ...
